Day 103: Attended an info session at the Edgemar Center for the Arts with my friend Danette Wilson. We both have a list of teachers we've heard great things about so we figured we'd audit them together. Unfortunately the teacher in this instance, Larry Moss, no longer teaches here and for some reason we didn't know that until we got there. The teacher who does run the school, Michelle Danner, seems very lovely and may be a fantastic instructor but I don't think I'll be going here. While I love their space, I haven't heard lots of casting directors rave about her as an instructor and right now I'm only interested in spending money on schools that will not only help me to grow as an actor but will also look great on my resume when a CD sees it. I might have changed my mind had I seen her work in action, but since the info session was not an audit, I have no idea if her method will work for me. So for now, I've got to pass....

However, they do have a theatre group that I may consider auditioning for in the future.

Michelle Danner and Larry Moss were partners and opened up the Edgmar Studio, but Moss now does private coaching. I took the two-day Golden Box session, and I really liked it... A LOT. What I like about their style is that they take from many different techniques and use that to work with the actors. I will say that only the very advanced get to work with Michelle which was fine by me because I'm still at the beginning stages anyway. I took a scene study class with Brian Drillinger for 8 weeks and he was just so good! I haven't had the chance to go back because I started working on the weekends (his class is on Saturday) but I would definitely go back if I had the chance.

I'm glad you had a great experience with them. And to be honest I'm very intrigued by how they'd blend many techniques but to spend that amount of money on someone who I've never seen teach is a big risk for me. That's the only thing I don't like about teachers who don't do audits or work with you privately or in a group before enrolling in the class, you just have no real idea how they work.

That's very true. I didn't know much about auditing before taking a class back then so I was fortunate in that aspect, but now I know better. I never even asked to audit so it's strange to me that they won't allow you to do it. They're definitely missing out on potential students. Hopefully in the future, they'll change it.
