Thanks to YouTube's easy editor I've added some new footage to my reel and put together a hosting reel. Enjoy!

Acting Reel (Finally got some footage with my natural hair!)

Hosting Reel (Would love to book a legit hosting gig. That would be a cool day job!)
Shot this scene for Kirsten's reel. Loving how my twist-out looked. :-)

Day 182: Finished writing my untitled Natural Hair short film. Been placed on the backburner for so long that I finally made myself focus to finish it. Will still have to do some re-writing but at least the first draft is done.

Day 183: Brainstormed story ideas for the feature film I'll be writing with Tara. Brainstorming's fun. It can take you in so many different directions. I'll be able to use some of these ideas for future scripts if we don't use them for this one.

Day 165: Mastercard Commercial Audition at Kathy Knowles Casting. This audition was straight to callbacks and it went so/so. First I played one half of a young couple in love then I switched with the other girl in the room and I was a waitress serving the couple. The producers were in the room and seemed to go back in forth between being bored and enjoying what we were doing. One thing I noticed, 9 out of 10 of the other black girls all had natural hair too and yet all of our hair was still styled differently- love it!!

Day 88: Hired Michael with Retouching For Less to give my headshots a custom setup that will show the versatility of my looks in one print. Since I don't know what type of response these photos will get I ordered the minimum of 25 prints of each one from The Actors Photo Lab. Certainly can't use them online but hopefully they will be well-received when I bring them into auditions and when I mail them to casting directors, managers and theatrical agents.

Day 87: Wrote more pages of the short I'm working on. I'm 2/3 of the way done!

P.S.- No word yet from the Louisiana agency. I couldn't get a hold of them on Monday when I called so I'll probably check back in later in the week.

Day 83: Wrote the first 2 pages of my short film about natural hair and I'm liking how easily it's flowing already. If I keep it up I should be finished with it in about a week.
Day 81: Came up with an outline for a super short film about natural hair that I want to produce sometime in the next 3 months. Like DWP it will be cute and comedic but unlike DWP it'll be shot in only 2 simple locations with only 3 actors so the budget will be miniscule - yay for that alone! It'll be no longer than 10 minutes {if that} and though I may decide to enter it into festivals the main reason for writing it is just to put something out there that I hope other newly natural gals can relate to. I plan to start writing over the weekend.
"I'm so happy, I can dance!"- song from Yo Gabba Gabba
Forgive the poor lighting and focus on the cute clips instead!
All I see is Jayden when I look at this picture.

Funky Black Girl Hair is what my supervisor and friend Daryl calls it. He likes the new 'do and so do most of the people in my circle. However it's pretty funny to me how a lot of white people seem to love my hair but with black folks it's hit or miss and unfortunately many times it's a miss. I mean I've only been wearing my natural hair out for a minute and I've already had a handful of people try to talk me into wearing the wig or weave more often, mainly black men. Oh well, can't please everybody. I love it! And Stephen's happy that I'm happy so in the end that's what counts.
Day 56: In order to take advantage of Argentum's 2 for 1 Pilot Season Special before it ends on Monday I took some new headshots. This was my first paid headshot session since we moved here and it was WELL worth it. I'd been wanting to shoot with Bradford Rogne of Photos LA for awhile now so I asked him to squeeze me in at the last minute and he did. Though the entire day and night was a rainy mess which caused traffic to be at a standstill, he not only accommodated my tardiness but the entire time I felt like I was in such great hands. He did my makeup flawlessly {it seriously convinced me to take a few classes at the MAC store} yet it still looked very natural and fresh. Though I scheduled a 2 look session we got each look with both my natural hair and what I call my "glam hair" AND he even threw in a few shots of a third outfit right at the end, love it!!

Pardon the photo overload but the hardest part of all of this will be choosing which ones to use! As you can probably tell I'm way more comfortable smiling and laughing then looking all sullen and serious but all I need is one theatrical shot so I'm good to go. If you're thinking of getting new headshots I can't recommend Bradford enough.
About a month ago I got an email from a reader named Shelby who used the contact form on my website to reach me but didn't leave her information so I had no way to respond. Shelby, thanks for writing!! Don't know if you actively read this blog but if you do, this post is for you...

First Name : Shelby
Comments : Hi, Brandi! I'm a newbie in an out-market (not LA) and just stumbled on your site. Congrats on all your accomplishments so far. Looking at your photos and web work - I must say, you are not taking advantage of the curly look. I know LA is lots of straight hair (or weave) - I have family there - but you look so cute and more natural with the curly looks. Ethnic hair is so much more popular these days. Of course, the LA market may be different but you really should consider that look. Course that is tempered with what you need to do - I'm just a newbie and not in that competitive LA market. Good luck - sistah to sistah!

Growing up I've had this on-going love affair with my hair. I've colored it {started at the age of 4 or 5 when I took my mother's hair dye off the counter, sat under the table so that the tablecloth could hide my sins as I literally poured the dye in the MIDDLE of my head!}, had an infamous jerri curl {though I was really young and cute so I wore the look well}, braided it, twisted it, cut it, wore drawstring ponytails {I still remember doing chaines across the floor in dance rehearsal and watching my ponytail fly off into a corner!}, pressed it and eventually developed a taste for that creamy crack that most black women love.

As I grew older I got really into weaves, first bonded ones {meaning they use hair glue to glue pieces to your scalp} and then sew-ins {self-explanatory}, until one day I got tired of always wearing fake hair and decided to start getting my own hair done. Well, that was back when I lived in Texas and could afford to go to the hair salon once a week for maintenance AND was still relying on using that creamy crack once every 6 weeks. But once we decided to leave the humidity of Houston, I knew I wanted to try and see if I could go natural. I kept seeing pictures of these beautiful black women with these gorgeous thick curls and I wanted that too! But going natural is no easy process. If you've seen Chris Rocks' Good Hair then you have an inkling of an idea of how hard it is to kick a habit you were raised to love and embrace. And trust me, it has been hard!

It's been 1 year and 8 months since I've been relaxer free and I'm finally confident enough to walk around with my own hair out without getting it straightened. It's actually been a little over a year since I've straightened my hair at all, mainly because I need to find a stylist who really knows how to care for natural hair before I let them put any heat on it. As you can see, I've been wearing my hair out for the last few days and I love it. It's comfortable. It's cute. It doesn't weigh me down. And honestly a part of me just feels free.

Don't get me wrong. I still love my wigs and weaves and will continue to wear them to auditions but now I'm planning on getting headshots with my hair like this really soon so that I can rock this look to some of my auditions as well. And who knows? Maybe this extra look will help me in my quest to get a commercial agent. We'll see.

I loved the brown curly hair but it was time for a change. So I'm back to black- at least for now- and am enjoying this kids-free thanksgiving weekend thanks to my Auntie Jeanetta.

Take a look at what I'm thankful for here and take some time to be grateful for someone or something in your life as well.

Of course I WOULD get a callback when my hair is a mess!

Had to run to the beauty supply to get a hair piece that looks like my headshots. Couldn't find an exact match but I got as close as I could get. Not totally happy with it but it'll do for now.

One step closer to landing this print job.

Back to Sunset Blvd. tomorrow.

Took my hair out.
Had real hair braided.
New hair put in.
Wondered to myself why my hair girl was so silent?
Went to the mirror.
AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!

New hair sucks.
WAAAAY too short!
Doesn't lay right.
Sprouting in all kinds of directions.
Furiously trying to fluff it out.
Looking like a damn fool.
Can't make it work.
Cousin & hair girl laugh at me.
Hair girl directed to take new hair out.
I throw away hair in disgust.

Suffice it to say I'm having a bad hair day!

Right about now is where I'd have a picture for ya'll to see exactly what I'm talking about BUT black women do not go out in public when we're having a bad hair day {if we can help it} and we certainly don't post pictures on our blogs of said bad hair day.

So...

Real hair is still braided.
Might as well put to good use.
Getting wig tomorrow.
Feeling new look coming on.

Stay tuned.
