It's baaaaaaaaacckk!

Game of Thrones season 5 finally premiered last night and did not disappoint. Before watching I binged on just about every video on their official YouTube channel. Here's one I found interesting about the writers/producers and how the show came to be on TV:

(Only watch if you've finished season 3!)

Day 340 - 343: Read a few scripts of the TV show Modern Family at: http://www.zen134237.zen.co.uk/Modern_Family/. I was actually laughing at loud while reading these episodes which lets you know just how funny the material really is.

Day 336: Caught up on TV via Hulu. Watched Modern Family, Glee, Once Upon a Time, Revenge and New Girl.

Day 337: Cardio Hip-Hop class at Your Neighborhood Studio. LOVE this class!

Day 338: Commercial audition at Kathy Knowles Casting. This was one of those auditions where you're not really an actor but a "real person" so they asked me questions about being a mom and it went so/so.

Day 339: Last Power Group of the year at TAN and it was a good one. There were lots of great accomplishments to close out 2011 and inspiring goals to start off 2012.
Day 197: Had a writing session with Tara. We know exactly where we wanna go and what we wanna do with the first act. We also know how we want to end the story but we're totally stuck in the middle.

Later that day I went to TAN to listen to guest speaker Tony Sepulveda, the VP of casting for Warner Bros. Dude had a very funny sense of humor and the place was, as expected, packed to the brim. Most important takeaway: Do mailings/drop-offs to TV casting directors as much as possible. They need so many new faces that in his opinion, those are the CD's we should focus on. Plus he's cast people who've sent him their stuff so that's always good to hear.

Day 198: Internship. Cleaned out the files of old headshots of "name" actors who once auditioned and/or was cast on the show years ago. People who are constantly recurring guest stars, film stars and even series regulars with their own show now. Gave me a little hope to see that just a few years ago they were hustling themselves... I'm sure they're still hustling now, just at a much higher level.

Day 199: Today was on-set day at class and we had too much fun! Both scenes that were put up were hilarious and watching everyone put their own spin on it had us rolling. It was interesting to do a scene without  my sides {that means the scenes in my script mom, auntie & grandma} in hand. I naturally wanted to "cheat out" towards the class as if I were performing a play on stage so my teacher had to break me of quite a few theatre habits. Good stuff.
Day 167: Last day of audition bootcamp and I'm sad it's over already. Today we were put on camera which is always eye-opening and somewhat difficult to watch yourself. The girls read from Cougartown and the guys read from The Mentalist so we had mixture of comedy and drama. As always, it was great to see the transformation from when we read at the beginning of class to when we read at the end of class. I'm still having a hard time with the comedy technique but I'm getting better at it and I know the more I work at it, the more natural and second nature it will eventually become. We all agreed that this class was worth the investment, not only because we all learned something each week, but more importantly because of the safe environment that Stan has created. Don't get me wrong, he will give it to you straight which we all appreciated. But he's honest without being mean-spirited so you're not afraid to just try it and see what happens. Plus we got a chance each week to see how the two other teachers, Elaine & Dajuan, work so that we can see if we can connect and learn from them as well. Needless to say, I'll be continuing in one of the ongoing classes.

Day 168: Read Hollywood Reporter {I love that my night job has a subscription!} and watched a marathon of Game of Thrones. If you don't have cable please find it somewhere online, this is must-see TV!!
Day 143: Audition for America's Most Wanted. I was brought in by Billy DaMota, a HUGE supporter of actors and ran into quite a few familiar faces in the lobby. I must admit I was pretty self-conscious for this one because I had to have an emergency root canal done by a specialist a few hours before. I wanted to reschedule the dentist appointment but I was getting on a plane to go out of town for 4 days so that wasn't an option. I also couldn't reschedule the audition because they were bringing people in in pairs and they weren't accepting tape so it was now or never. I made the best of it but I'm so glad they didn't put us on tape because part of my mouth was still quite numb. When it was over, however, Billy said I did an awesome job and told me to kiss the baby for him. All in all I'm glad I went but I hope to never be in that position again so I'm taking care of all of my dental needs over the next 2 months... all $2800 worth of them, ugh.

Wow.

This is why we hustle, to get news like this: http://theworkingactress.com/2011/05/23/the-day-my-life-changed/.

One day...
Day 107: I attended USC's annual end of year showcase of it's MFA graduates at the invitation of a friend of mine who was in TSU's theatre program with me and subsequently got her MFA at USC. The program itself was right under an hour and it was a nice mixture of comedic and dramatic scenes. After their performance, the reception provided a great opportunity for me to meet not only the wonderful actors but other former graduates who raved about their experience as well as a handful of the program's staff. The highlight of my night was when an incognito casting director came up to my friend and raved on and on about how fantastic she was when she auditioned for her and that she felt so bad that the producers cast someone else because they all really loved her. My friend then introduced her to me as the casting director of True Blood. Wait, what?!?

"Are you Libby Goldstein?" I asked.
"Yes" she said, looking at me for the first time. "Wait, do I know you?"
"No, but I did just send you my headshot last week."
"Oh okay," she says, as if recognizing me from my picture.

Now true enough, my envelope could very well still be in a large pile somewhere on her desk unopened but even if that is the case I was still thrilled to finally meet someone from one of the small handful of cd's whose radar I want to get on this year {see #8 on my 2011 Goals & Action Plan}. Time for me to order some postcards so I can send her a quick follow up by next week.
Day 93: Mailed my headshot to the casting directors of the following TV shows...

  1. Law & Order: Los Angeles
  2. Grey's Anatomy
  3. Drop Dead Diva*
  4. Pretty Little Liars
  5. True Blood
  6. House of Payne*
  7. Single Ladies*
  8. Vampire Diaries*
  9. The Young & The Restless
And the following films...
  1. Good Deeds
  2. Untitled Tupac Shakur Project*
  3. American Reunion: American Pie 4*
  4. Soul Ties
* indicates it shoots in Atlanta

Later in the day I went to the CBS Radford studio to support my friends screening. Lex {whom I often discuss on this blog} was the cinematographer of a very cute short film called Brownie Points. Jenn Page directed it and Sheila Daley starred. Another film that screened was a beautifully touching short called A Note to Etienne that Allison Vanore produced. Congrats all around guys! Very well done.
Day 64 - 65: Used Hulu to catch up on multiple episodes of Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy. Didn't have time to catch up on Glee so that's on the agenda for this week. Though I'm thankful for my job I definitely miss watching TV shows that I love as they air.

Last Monday morning. Not only was it the day of The Young & The Restless audition but it was also the first day of Jayden's new school. Needless to say there was a lot going on! Though I had already registered Jayden the Friday before, there was still a process we had to go through and the clock was ticking. Once he was finally settled in his new classroom I made a dash for my car and headed out.

I dropped Stevie off at his daycare and made my way towards CBS. According to my GPS I had more than enough time to get there, find a parking space on the lot and head up to their office without breaking a sweat. Thankfully there was no traffic so getting there was a breeze.

I parked my car after circling the lot quite a few times and made my way up. The waiting room was filled with a handful of early twenty-somethings, black, asian, hispanic... all "ethnic" and all pretty good looking. I signed in, placed my headshot on the stack next to the sign-in sheet and found the sides that had my name on them.

"Brandi Ford... Hotel Clerk". I look over the sides. 2 pages. 5 lines. Nothing to freak out about. Easy peasy right?

Only when you only have 5 lines how do you really give them what they want in such a short amount of time?

Agh, can't think about that right now. Focus on the scene. So I do. I break it down the best way I know how from the different books I've read (because I haven't actually taken a cold reading class yet) and wait for my name to be called. Once it is I greet the cd (without shaking his hand of course) and we take a moment to chat. The first thing he tells me is that he's brought me in because they believe actors who take time out to mail them a headshot should be given a chance to be seen- nice! He says it's a great way for them to meet fresh faces, especially those who are unrepresented like myself.

"Why did you target our show specifically?" he asks.

"Because my grandmother loves it!" came flying out of my mouth before I could stop to even think about the question. Maybe I should have said because they use my type often and I'd love to work on a soap but I just told the first thing that literally came to mind. My grandma Rose really does love the show and watches it religiously and to think about how excited she'd be to see me on there {even with 5 lines or less} is awesome.

"Where are you from?" he asks.

"I'm a California-Las Vegas hybrid," I say. And ding, just like that the conversation switched to Vegas hotels for the rest of the way. Good ones, bad ones, those to try and those to avoid. Apparently he stayed at one of the newer hotels for the emmy's over the summer and was given less than impressive service. You know what I told him, try the Hard Rock next time! {Gotta stay cool with my former employers!}

Alright, enough with the small chat {which normally doesn't go on that long but this was a "general," a chance to meet & greet, not a regular audition} time to do the scene. And the irony wasn't lost on us that I was reading for a hotel clerk! We stand. He serves as the reader and we're done in all of 2 minutes.

"Very nice," he says. "You've got great energy. Thanks for coming in." Which means.........

I don't know. Could mean he'll keep my info for whenever he can use me. Could mean nothing and just be what he tells everyone when they leave. Who knows? The important thing is that I got a chance to make a connection with a cd that's on my target list and for that I am satisfied. Of course it doesn't stop here. Now it's time for me to send a thank you note {as soon as my new photo business cards come in} and make an effort to keep him updated via postcards on anything new that I'm doing but at least the initial connection has made.

And guess what? I can file him under cd's who are actor-friendly. Always nice to work with those!

After I get off of work tonight I'll be on the internet watching the latest few episodes of Young & The Restless. Why you ask? Because tomorrow I'm meeting the casting director! I sent their office my headshot 6 months ago and I just got a call on Friday to come in tomorrow for a general and a cold-read.

A general {for my non-industry readers, i.e. my family} is an opportunity to meet with a casting director or agent, show them a glimpse of your personality as well as catch a glimpse of theirs. I'll also get to do a cold-read so it's a chance to audition... but for no role in particular. No matter. I get to show a new casting director what I can do and I'm VERY excited as this is the first audition where I'll actually be on a studio lot- gotta bring my id to even be allowed on the property. Just knowing that I've been given a chance to get in the room is awesome and with 6 months gone by since my submission, pleasantly unexpected.
I had an awesome interview and screen test 2 weeks ago for City TV as they were looking for a Host to tape promos for the events held at the Santa Monica Library. Got the news today that I booked the job! Since they have multiple events each month they booked a total of 3 Hosts and I'll be the one promoting the children's events. *YAY* I start later this month and I'll be taping at their studio every Wednesday morning. The best part is that I will be able to use the footage to get my hosting reel started.

Major props to my TSU friend Trecia and her X-Treme Motion crew who performed on the Season 5 premiere of MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, otherwise known by it's loyal fans as ABDC. I was rooting for this crew because all of the members are former MOTION majorettes and so am I. For those of you unfamiliar with the term majorette {don't worry before I moved to Houston I was too!} they are the young ladies who dance in front of the marching bands of HBCU's. And by dance I mean they GET DOWN! If you've seen Drumline you have an idea. Just watching them on TV last night made me get up and do some old 8-counts- and promptly sit down as my energy level isn't anywhere near their's anymore. :-)

Take a look...

Although they were eliminated in this round I am VERY proud of them for making it this far and look forward to what they have to show the world in the future.

Congrats ladies!

Yesterday I had my first live interview on the KTLA morning news to talk about my experience on the What I Hate About Me show. It started off with me being picked up at 7am by this beautiful black sedan. Car service- what!
For whatever reason my stomach was full of knots as I rode to the studio {probably a combination of nerves & the fact that my driver was very heavy on the brakes} so I used the breathing techniques I learned in childbirth class to keep as calm as possible. Yes those little breathing tips are still coming in handy!

Once we got on the lot I met Gerald, the top-notch publicist for Style Network, who put this all together. I couldn't believe he'd been in PR for 10 years- he looks like a college kid!
After giving us a quick rundown of our segment, the producer took a shot of us getting ready...
Getting mic'd...
Live on the air...
And here's the clip...
And just like that it was over as quickly as it began.

I had a great time and all of the anchors, staff and interns were very nice to me. Plus I got to meet Billy Zane while waiting in the green room- he was much taller and nicer than I expected.

Hopefully there'll be a lot more opportunities like this in the near future.

Hey guys!

Just a quick post to let you know my episode of the What I Hate About Me show that I booked & shot a few months ago will be airing tonight and throughout the rest of the week on the Style Network. If you have cable or Dish/Direct TV then you'll be able to see it. It's an hour long episode with me and the rest of the fam so I'm kinda nervous but mainly very excited.

Hope you get a chance to check it out.

I know it's been a minute but last week was a complete whirlwind! All week I shot my episode of the new show "10 Things I Hate About Me." While it sounds negative & self-depracating, it really was a fabulous, fun and very POSITIVE experience! I'm not allowed to talk about all of the wonderful {and I mean WONDERFUL} things that transpired until after it airs but I will say I had an AWESOME time and am just blown away by God's favor. The entire crew was a joy to work with and I'm soooooooooo thankful I was selected to be a part of it. :-)

For now the air date is set for sometime in early January. I'll keep you posted once I have more details.

One of my absolute FAVORITE, do not miss an episode, shows is LOST. So you can imagine the little thrill I got when I saw these pictures on one of my favorite {hilarious} blogs Cake Wrecks.

This 3-D cake was designed by the super talented team at Charm City Cakes aka Duff & the Ace of Cakes Crew to celebrate the 100th Episode of the popular show. Congrats guys!

Isn't it amazing what some people can do with flour, eggs and sugar?!?

For those of you who watch prime-time tv, last night's episode of Dirty Sexy Money was deliciously juicy! It seems that each episode has one more twist than the last and just when you think that one character is inherently good/evil, they do something to surprise you. While it's definitely more of a soap than it's other prime-time counterparts, the storylines are intriguing, the writing is witty and the actors are hot!!! Have you seen Blair Underwood in this show?!? The bottom line is, this is one dramedy (drama-comedy) you should be tuning into.
